At Sea in Greenland

Today is a sea day, finally, and I can catch up on my almost blog. First, I want to continue Thursday’s adventure. We left the most northerly point (71°46.7789′) of our voyage inside Greenland National Park to travel to Ittoqqortoormiit (and I am not making that name up).

On the way, the captain decided to stop in Scoresby Sund for some scenic cruising by Zodiacs. Mark went, with my camera in hand, while I decided to work out instead. He was in the photography Zodiac and their guide took them to a seal snuggled in between some icebergs and seemingly unafraid of people or the sounds of dozens of cameras clacking. I suspect the dozen cameras took thousands of photos of this cutie. He looks so adorable, although we wish he was scared of humans for his survival from hunters.

Mark came back to room and told me I must go and to get on the second round of Zodiacs. My hair was soaking wet, I grabbed whatever clothes were in front of me and ran to board the last Zodiac out. The seal was gone and my driver (one of the expedition team) was really into rocks, i.e. granite and mountains, so we took a different route. The mountains are towering at 500 meters above the water and 1,000 meters below. They are approximately a billion years old. He took the nose of the boat right up to the mountainside to show us how to read the lines of movement, age and weather. And because he really wanted to touch one, which we all did.  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As we approached the mountainside, we turned a corner to discover what could only be described as a sculptural ice garden, it was breathtaking. My photos do not do it justice. The guide mentioned we are the only people in the world to ever see this exactly as it is. That took a moment to sink in as the enormity of it hit me. I had goosebumps. Thankfully, The World had a welcoming drink boat with hot apple cider and champagne to cap off this amazing afternoon. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
